Summary

This report provides an inventory and assessment of Cold War-era buildings and structures at Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB) and Gunter Annex, Alabama. This work was conducted to assist the Air Education and Training Command in fulfilling its responsibilities under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Two hundred and ten buildings and structures were identified for inventory and assessed for eligibility under Criterion Consideration G. Documentation included completion of the Alabama Historical Commission Inventory forms.

Seven properties at Maxwell AFB (Buildings 1400, 1401, 1402, 1403, 1404, 1405, and 1406) are recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion Consideration G for their association with the Cold War and eligible as a historic district under Criterion A for their association with Air Force education and the creation of air power doctrine during the Cold War. Building 857 at Gunter Annex is recommended eligible for the NRHP under Criterion Consideration G for its association with the Cold War, eligible under Criterion A for its association with Cold War-era air defense, and eligible under Criterion C as an example of hardened military construction.
