Archaeological Context and Land Use in the Western Rio Grande Plains: Phase II Evaluations at Eleven Sites on the Laughlin Air Force Base, Val Verde County, Texas
Editor(s): J. Philip Dering
Year: 1998
Summary
In May-July 1996, Phase II archaeological assessments were conducted at 11 prehistoric sites located on Laughlin Air Force Base, Val Verde County, Texas. As a result of the Phase I archaeological survey by the University of Texas at San Antonio's Center for Archaeological Research, the sites were recommended as potentially eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. The sites are situated within a dissected upland of the western Rio Grande Plains of southwestern Texas. Six of the tested sites are located on the eastern bank of Sacatosa Creek ( 41VV1686 through 41VV1691 ). These sites represent a series of ephemeral campsites along the eastern bank of the creek and include surface and subsurface hearths. Chipped-stone debitage, expedient flake tools, and exhausted formal implements characterize lithic assemblages at these sites. Debitage recovered at these sites is dominated by small-sized interior debitage, indicating that stone tool resharpening, maintenance, and repair were conducted. Hearth features observed and tested along Sacatosa Creek are clast defined and are dominated by cobbles of limestone and occasional sandstone. Diagnostic tools include an Early Archaic Uvalde point, an Early Triangular, and several Archaic aged unidentified point fragments. No prehistoric carbonized plant remains were recovered from floatation sediments.
