Year: 2020
Summary
Argonne National Laboratory conducted a historic building inventory and evaluation on behalf of the United States Air Force at Laughlin Air Force Base, Kinney and Val Verde Counties, Texas. The evaluation aids Laughlin Air Force Base in managing the historic properties under their jurisdiction as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The survey examined 196 facilities (buildings and structures) at Laughlin Air Force Base’s main base and three associated geographically separated units: Laughlin Auxiliary Airfield located near Spofford, Texas; the Next Generation Radar Facility located near Brackettville, Texas; and the Southwinds Marina at Lake Amistad. The buildings and structures addressed in this report are military operations buildings, flight training facilities, support facilities, and recreational facilities. Built between 1955 and 2017, the 196 buildings and structures were evaluated for historical significance during the Cold War and post-cold War periods of significance. As a result of the inventory and evaluation, all of the facilities are recommended as not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
