Phase I Archaeological Survey of 2,400 Acres and Phase II NRHP Evaluations of Eight Sites Joint base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, Burlington County, New Jersey

Summary

This report presents the results of Phase I archaeological survey within 2,400 acres and Phase II NRHP eligibility testing of eight archaeological sites by Versar, Inc. at JB MDL. Fieldwork was conducted between April 22 and December 22, 2019. In total, 1,472 shovel tests were excavated during the current investigation: 1,237 shovel tests within block shovel test areas and 235 shovel tests within point survey areas. Seven previously unrecorded sites were documented: one prehistoric, three historical, and three with both historical and prehistoric components. The prehistoric site components consisted of one Early Woodland, one indeterminate Woodland, and one indeterminate occupation. The historical sites dated between the late-eighteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. Three of the newly recorded sites were recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP (28BU967, 28BU968, and 28BU970), and four were recommended not eligible (28BU969, 28BU971, 28BU972, and 28BU973). Eight previously recorded sites were evaluated for NRHP eligibility. Of these, six prehistoric sites (or the prehistoric components of the sites) evaluated were recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP (28BU517, 28BU519/530, 28BU528, 28BU634, and 28BU636). None of the historical site components (28BU517, 28BU519/530, and 28BU528) were recommended eligible.
