Summary

On August 16, 1991 a field party made up of John Jamison (NPS, IAS-Atlanta), Ralph Hartley (NPS, Midwestern Center-Lincoln), Bill Metz (staff archaeologist, warren Air Force Base) and Robert M. Thorne visited archaeological site 48-LA-277 in anticipation of the development of the site as a public access educational display. The information that is available on the site forms and that which was observed in the field does not appear to be in agreement. While the site file indicates a buried artifact bearing strata that follows the slope of the hill, no artifacts were observed either in the buried horizon or at the point of contact between the buried horizon and the overburden which covers it. The fact that the proposed display area is on a slope is a complicating factor, not from the perspective of site stabilization, but more from the perspective of display development. Seven stabilization and display development recommendations are offered in the document.
