Summary

The subject geoarchaeological field study of prehistoric site 48LA277 is of a reconnaissance nature only. The site area was examined in the field on October 7, 1991. No attempt was made to conduct detailed geologic mapping or detailed sedimentary studies. The site lies within Francis E. Warren Air Force Base at the approximate location, SE SE NW NE of Section 27, Township 14 North, Range 67 West. The site is a Late Prehistoric manifestation. A Woodland pottery shard plus two, side-notched arrow points were recovered as well as two radiocarbon dates ca. 1150 ± 80 (Beta 10722) and 970 ± 70 (Beta 10723). The site contains seven cultural features including rock filled hearths. Much of the original site has been destroyed as a result of historic impact. An abandoned "quarry" pit occupies the area that lies 30± m north of the site, a road bed adjoins the site on the east while railroad tracks lie just east of the site. All of this past ground disturbing activity has reduced the site to a northeast trending, 40± m long "strip" that is only 10± m wide.
