Summary

EPG conducted Phase I data recovery testing within three parcels near the northwest corner of 36th Street and Southern Avenue in Phoenix, Arizona, for compliance with ARS §41-865 and Chapter 8, Section 802[B2] of the City’s Historic Preservation Ordinance. The parcels (APN 122-70-002, 122-71-003 and 122-70-008) are within the recorded boundaries of prehistoric archaeological site AZ T:12:137(ASM), a series of prehistoric loci referred to in the archaeological literature as “Las Canoas” or “Las Canopas.” Phase I data recovery testing was recommended by the City Archaeology Office in advance of residential development of the parcels. EPG prepared a work plan and obtained a burial agreement from the Arizona State Museum prior to

implementing the plan. Phase I testing entailed deep and shallow backhoe trenches throughout undeveloped portions of the parcels to achieve a 3 percent areal sample.
