Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Three shipwrecks associated with the 1559 Tristán de Luna expedition have been located off the coast of Emanuel Point in Pensacola Bay. These shipwrecks have borne witness to the activities occurring overhead and the development of Pensacola's maritime landscape. The landscapes to meet the evolving needs of the population drove the port to great success. However, alterations in the landscape extended beyond Pensacola’s waterfront to the area encompassing the Emanuel Point Shipwrecks. A bathymetric record, spanning across Pensacola's historical period, will be constructed using navigational charts and GIS. The bathymetric timeline is then compared to factors that have impacted the sediment load in the Pensacola Bay region to assess the correlation between land use and changes in the physical environment of the submerged archaeological sites.
