Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Nestled in the heart of Central New York, the Finger Lakes have a rich maritime history that has been underrepresented in archaeological study. These eleven lakes have acted as thoroughfares since the Pre-Columbian period through modern day and have supported a wide variety of watercraft. Although many shipwrecks and submerged archaeological sites are known within the lakeside communities, significant archaeological documentation has only started over the past decade.

During the summer of 2022 the Skaneateles Lake Wreck Modeling Project team visited three wrecks well known to local scuba divers and created 3D, scale constrained photogrammetry models of the sites with two days of field data collection. This low cost, low effort project resulted in freely available digital models for public engagement and further archaeological research. The methods used in this project offer an avenue to quickly and cheaply record many sites while actively engaging the local communities.
