Summary

This is a poster submission presented at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The I-10 Mobile River Bridge (MRB) Archaeology Project is an ongoing interdisciplinary effort to excavate and interpret 15 sites in downtown Mobile, Alabama prior to the Mobile River Bridge and Byway project. The project area spans centuries of Gulf Coast history and includes Woodland, colonial, and 19th-20th century urban components. The MRB project is contextualizing archaeological work with research in diverse fields, including oral history, archival analysis, geology, geography, sociology, and art, and making findings publicly accessible. This poster examines the MRB project’s interdisciplinary methodology and presents preliminary results for the Virginia Street Site (1MB551). Virginia Street contains sparse precontact and colonial components, as well as commercial and residential lots from the turn of the 20th-century neighborhood known as Down the Bay. Notably, this site was home to the Owens Family, who lived at 906 Franklin Street for over 60 years.
