Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Digital Approaches in Nautical Archaeology", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
When the FaroArm-Rhino Archaeology Users Group (FRAUG) was founded in 2007 more than seven years of digital recording of ship-timbers had been conducted. Addressed the growing problem of agreeing on common standards in regard to digital documentation practices, FRAUG served as a platform for discussions and troubleshooting. Several recording manuals, templates and best practice advices were also made. A common understanding of what to recording, how to record and software programmes used, made it easy to exchange digital files and easy to discuss projects. Today we face similar problems as in 2007. Recording of ship-finds is conducted in many different ways making it difficult to compare and discuss ship-finds. This paper will address the pros and cons for common standards in digital nautical archaeology. Is it too late to find a common ground? Or can we re-vitalize FRAUG and re-boost the recording manuals, templates and best practice advices?
