A Photogrammetry Of The Past: A Time To Observe And A Time To Record. The Example Of The Madrague De Giens (1st BC)

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Digital Approaches in Nautical Archaeology", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Photogrammetry is widely recognised as a formidable improvement in the field of underwater archaeology, and presents many advantages, among which the possibility of recording quickly a large quantity of data. If the time gained in the documentation phase is appreciable, it also significantly impacted the time devoted to the excavation of a wreck.

Indeed, given that recording phase has been reduced, consequently the period of direct observation of the wreck has also been abridged. We can therefore question the possible consequences of such a situation. A project has recently shed new light on this issue: in 2019, we resumed the study of the iconic excavation of Madrague de Giens wreck (1st BCE). One objective was to digitize the archives pictures (11’000) to generate a photogrammetric model. The new 3D model allows us to consider the contribution of this tool, while underlining the qualitative importance of the direct observations made by the archaeologists in-situ.
