Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Maritime Archeology of the Slave Trade: Past and Present Work, and Future Prospects", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The LAqua Project - Salvaguarda e divulgação do património cultural subaquático do Concelho de Lagos - aims to locate the underwater archaeological finds that have been reported to the DGPC/CNANS, but that still lack georeferencing. It is also intended to evaluate its characteristics and the conservation status of this Underwater Cultural Heritage, establishing parameters for in situ monitoring program.
In addition to these general objectives, it is proposed the development of subprojects that contribute to the theoretical-methodological growth of Maritime Archaeology in Portugal. As a result, a research was created to propose what are the landscapes and seascapes related to the beginnings of enslaved Africans traffic, in the first half of the fifteenth century.
It is in this transition from the Middle Ages to Modern, already within Mercantilism that Archaeology could explain the primal essence of the dehumanizing transformation process of the enslaved person into a commodity.
