Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Maritime Archeology of the Slave Trade: Past and Present Work, and Future Prospects", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Competition for financial support of research projects is increasing. As the number of promising research projects increase over time, ‘single-source’ funding is not effective providing sustainability. For organizations with a vested interest in research, community engagement and capacity building, forming strategic partnerships can be an effective strategy for sustainable research projects. The authors discuss multiple projects that ranges from conducting preliminary investigations of shipwrecks to full maritime archaeological assessments. These projects are case studies that examine the benefits of collaborations. The institutional collaborations that are a part of this discussion includes non-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations, private for-profit corporations, research institutions, museums, and governmental institutions. The collaboration creates a new model for research project execution, public archaeology, community engagement, demonstrating that ‘we are stronger together’.
