Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Ongoing Care and Study Through a Digital Catalogue of Port Royal", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The Port Royal excavation revealed a diverse range of artifacts and structures. Both brick and wooden structures were found, as well as artifacts of wood, ceramics, glass and metals. Each of these materials necessitated a different conservation approach and continues to require unique handling during its continued care. Because of their materials, especially brick and ceramics, many of these artifacts were stable despite being found underwater and therefore did not need much intervention. Their ongoing conservation and care continues to be evaluated as the artifacts are being cataloged into PastPerfect. New considerations evaluate the artifacts’ needs for repatriation and future requirements of their permanent home in a museum. The collection is currently being stored in the Conservation Research Laboratory in the Anthropology Building at Texas A&M University. The presentation discusses how conservation is a continuous process and provides an overview of the collection’s current needs
