Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Pre-Recorded Video Presentation Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
CSS Georgia was a Civil War ironclad ship stationed near Fort Jackson at the mouth of the Savannah River from October 1862 until the ship was scuttled in December 1864. During the 2015 and 2017 excavations of the site, archaeologists were surprised by the large number of organic artifacts retrieved from the site, including over 200 pieces of leather. Many of the leather fragments are too fragmentary to determine their original purpose, but approximately one third of the assemblage are likely shoe fragments. This paper will present the leather assemblage as a whole, with a focus on the shoe-related fragments.
