A Cultural Resources Survey for the W230-A SRP Southern Substation Cell Tower in Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Douglas R. Mitchell

Year: 2010

Summary

A cultural resources survey for a cell tower collocation site near 47th Avenue and Southern Avenue in Phoenix (Paleo West No. 10-45).

This project is for the collocation of AT&T panels onto an existing SRP tower, with associated utility trenching. Site AZ T:12:114(ASM) is reported as being within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) for direct effects. However, the tower site has been extensively disturbed, and Paleo West recommends that this project proceed with a finding of "no adverse effect on historic properties in the APE for direct effects". Two archaeological sites and two prehistoric canals are within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) for visual effects. However, given the nature of this project - collocation on an existing tower - it appears unlikely that these historic properties would be adversely affected so Paleo West recommends this project proceed with a finding of "no adverse effect on historic properties in the APE for visual effects". However, Paleo West recommends that should cultural deposits be discovered during ground disturbing activities, all work in the immediate vicinity should stop until the remains can be evaluated by a professional archaeologist.
