Cultural Resources Monitoring of Borrow Test Pits and Bore Holes for the Salt River Project Fence Lake Mine Transportation Corridor, Apache County, Arizona

Author(s): DMG Four Corners Research, Inc.

Year: 2003

Summary

In preparation for construction of the Salt River Project (SRP) Fence Lake Mine Transportation

Corridor in eastern Apache County, Arizona, sediment and rock core samples were collected using a drill/ coring rig and backhoe to test possible borrow and gravel materials to construct the railroad bed. Eleven test pits and one bore hole location were monitored for cultural resources. Additionally, eight access routes leading to test pits were surveyed; the other test pits and single bore hole location were accessed directly from existing roads, some of which are not shown on the topographic maps. These areas were surveyed as they were located beyond the original survey boundaries of the Fence Lake Mine Transportation Corridor in Arizona (O'Brien and Dosh 1987, Neal 1995). Monitoring and survey was conducted between June 27 and 30, 2003. The total area examined amounted to 20.2 acres (8.2 hectares).
