Class III Cultural Resources Survey and Evaluation of 1,350 Acres, Buckley Space Force Base, Arapahoe County, Colorado

Summary

From 31 May to 16 June 2022, Stell Environmental Enterprises, Inc. (Stell) performed a Class III Cultural Resources Inventory of 1,231.2 ac of the proposed 1,350-acre (ac) survey area on lands managed by Buckley Space Force Base under subcontract agreement 1F-60535 with Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne). Lands considered inaccessible to pedestrian survey consisted of 112.5 ac belonging to the main flight line, which restricted pedestrian and vehicular traffic, while an additional 6.3 ac were within an inaccessible fenced area. On 27 July 2022, Stell personnel returned to perform subsurface testing at 5AH.3962 (Temporary Site 3), a dense, prehistoric open lithic scatter near East Toll Gate Creek. As a result of the survey, Stell archaeologists identified 3 new Precontact archaeological sites, 4 new historic-era archaeological sites, 1 linear cultural landscape, and 14 isolated finds, of which 9 are Precontact and 5 are historic-era. Additionally, updated condition assessments were conducted for all previously recorded archaeological resources identified within the survey area. Of these 17 previously recorded resources, only 6 were relocated and re-evaluated. Forms for all of these resources (including those not relocated) were completed to provide an updated record. All archaeological resources identified or revisited during this inventory are recommended as not eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
