Permian Basin BPA#9: Archaeological Survey of Ring Midden Sites in the CFO District
Editor(s): David Unruh
Year: 2024
Summary
The BPA#9 project was developed under the Permian Basin Mitigation Program to conduct an intensive survey and inventory of approximately 60,000 acres within seven individual parcels of land situated across the foothills of the Guadalupe and Sacramento Mountains. Combined, these seven study units constitute the project area. Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), was contracted by the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carlsbad Field Office (CFO) to perform this survey, with the goal of compiling a roster of archaeological sites containing ring-midden features and to define patterns in the distribution of ring middens across the landscape. Of the seven study units, six (Little McKittrick Draw, Azotea Peak, Texas Hill, Box Canyon, Big Ox Yoke Canyon, and Challenge Canyon) were inventoried by means of traditional survey methods, whereas the remaining Jurnigan Draw study unit incorporated use of the Transect Recording Unit (TRU) method. An eighth study unit, the Castile Formation Unit, was sampled through targeted TRU survey of eight sites that were known to contain one or more potential ring middens. Another separate task, the Mortar Hole Study, was conducted as part of the overall contract and involved the recording of several ring middens.
