Summary
A Phase IA archaeological sensitivity assessment of75.54-acres and Phase II archaeological investigations of three previously recorded precontact sites were conducted at the New Boston Space Force Station (NBSFS) for Argonne National Laboratory by Landmark Archaeology, Inc. The investigations resulted in the identification of 11 new archaeological sites; six sites are interpreted to be precontact habitation sites and five sites are stone features sites that may be ceremonial Native American sites representing ceremonial stone landscapes (CSL). The presence of potential CSL sites indicate ritual behavior may be an important aspect of Native American land use within NBSFS lands. Based on Phase II investigations, all three precontact sites (East Meadow Site, 27-HB-0233; Wells Bog Site, 27-HB-0234; and Tree Throw Site, 27-HB-0404) are recommended individually eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion D. National Register of Historic Places eligibility for each newly discovered site is presented in the report, as are future avenues of research at NBSFS. The current investigations demonstrate the need to revise the New Boston Air Force Station Archaeological District nomination to accommodate new archaeological and historical information including, but not limited to, site associations and themes, and cultural chronologies, and to develop research questions related to Early Woodland and Late Woodland cultural development within interior upland valleys in south central New Hampshire.
