Data Recovery Excavations at the Hello Site (42TO5136), Utah Test and Training Range-South, Tooele County, Utah

Summary

Far Western, through subcontract with Argonne National Laboratory, conducted data recovery excavations at the Hello site (42TO5136) between July 11th and 21st, 2022. In total, 4.2 cubic meters of sediment were excavated, but no artifacts were found intact in the subsurface. A presumed hearth identified in 2017 was demonstrated to be a thin layer of naturally deposited charcoal upon excavation. Although no hearth was found, effort supports the initial interpretation of the Hello site as a single-component Haskett site eroding from the excavated landform, albeit with most artifacts having already been exposed.

Although there are no substantive cultural deposits remaining at the Hello site, this does not preclude individual artifacts still being retained that may erode out over time. Given the unique value of a single-component Haskett site to current research on early occupations of the Great Basin, we recommend that the site remains eligible for the National Register based on this significance under Criterion D. We further recommend that the site be monitored on a regular basis as appropriate should important material become exposed by ongoing erosion.
