Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics anticipates archaeology to grow at a 6% rate. The majority of those jobs will be in the private sector cultural resource management (CRM) archaeology. However, many students are ill -prepared for the realities of CRM work, unaware of Section 106, Phase I, etc. Often drowning in student debt, these early-career professionals are offered lower paying positions than they would if they came in with this knowledge. To help combat this, Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc (CEC), has begun to offer paid internships to students that are considering a career in archaeology. During these internships, students performed a wide-range of tasks not often taught in university classrooms including, Phase I surveys and basic Section 106 coordination. This paper explores the knowledge gaps early-career archaeologists have and how these gaps can be bridged by partnerships between academia and CRM to prepare students for their careers.
