Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
This study delves into the intersection of climate change and maritime archaeology, focusing on two sites within St. Augustine, Florida: Fort Mose and the Tolomato Bar Anchorage. We chart the impact of shifting environmental conditions, illuminating the urgent threats they pose to our understanding of history. Drawing on GIS and archaeological data, we contrast the distinct challenges faced by terrestrial and underwater sites in the era of climate change. Furthermore, we extrapolate these findings to predict future vulnerabilities and discuss adaptive strategies for preserving these invaluable portals to our past. This investigation not only illuminates the resilience and fragility of historical sites but also offers a blueprint for safeguarding our cultural heritage amidst our changing climate.
