Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Exploration-Forward Archaeology Through Community-Driven Research", at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In May 2023, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency partnered with NOAA Ocean Exploration to complete its first funded partner mission to the far reaches of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. As part of the Seascape Alaska 1: Aleutians Deepwater Mapping expedition, NOAA, DPAA, and the veteran-owned remote sensing company Orca Maritime conducted a joint investigation to locate a B-25 lost on August 16, 1944 during a routine administrative flight between Attu Island and Adak Island. Through this collaborative partnership, the team successfully conducted an AUV survey within the broader NOAA expedition window. This presentation will highlight the successes and achievements of this interagency project while addressing ideas for future collaborations.
