Historic Building Inventory and Evaluation for Edwards Air Force Base, Kern County, California

Summary

This report presents the results of a historic building inventory and evaluation conducted on behalf of the United States Department of the Air Force at Edwards Air Force Base, Kern County, California. This evaluation aids Edwards Air Force Base in managing the historic properties under its jurisdiction, as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The inventory, conducted in June 2021, documented 45 facilities at Edwards Air Force Base and evaluated them for historical significance against the criteria established for listing a property on the National Register of Historic Places. The facilities addressed in this inventory were built between 1948 and 1971 during the Cold War Era, and they fall into five categories: routine base operations and support facilities; dining and recreational facilities; liquid and water storage facilities; electric substation and power station facilities; and memorials. As a result of this study, Argonne National Laboratory found that the facilities did not meet the criteria; therefore, all 45 facilities are recommended not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, either individually or as contributing elements to a historic district.
