Historic Building Inventory and Evaluation for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Greene and Montgomery Counties, Ohio

Summary

This report presents the results of a historic building inventory and evaluation conducted on behalf of the United States Department of the Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Greene and Montgomery Counties, Ohio. This evaluation aids Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in managing the historic properties under its jurisdiction, as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended.

The inventory examined 25 facilities (buildings and structures) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and evaluated them for historical significance against the criteria for significance established for listing a property on the National Register of Historic Places. Five of the facilities (Buildings 20094, 20145, 20651, 20652, and 20676) evaluated in the study are associated with Wright- Patterson Air Force Base’s mission of aviation research and design. Much of the research conducted within these buildings is classified; therefore, minimal information about the activities within the buildings was available for this study. Although no records located during the present study suggest that any of the evaluated research facilities played a direct role in significant events tied to the Cold War and post-Cold War era periods or related to Wright-Patterson AFB missions (Criterion A), this cannot be confirmed at this time. Therefore, Argonne recommends that these facilities be re-evaluated if and when information regarding the research activities can be accessed, or if a significant association or event emerges that could render the facilities eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The remainder of the facilities do not meet one or more of the criteria; therefore, these facilities are recommended not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
