Summary
This is an abstract from the "Military Cultural Resources Management" session, at the 90th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.
Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) is supporting the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) with an on-going enterprise-wide initiative striving for full compliance with Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990 for archaeological collections dating to prior to November 16, 1990. Argonne and AFCEC are partnering with 109 Department of the Air Force (DAF) installations to provide an accounting of all previous compliance efforts and NAGPRA human remains and cultural items in pre-1990 archaeological collections, and to develop and execute a plan for notification and repatriation or reburial as needed. This poster highlights our data collection and management strategies, including the development of a customized database and challenges faced during the inventory process. The poster will also highlight repatriations made possible through this project and discuss future NAGPRA compliance collaborations within the DAF.
