Summary

This is an abstract from the "Military Cultural Resources Management" session, at the 90th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.

Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) is supporting the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) with an ongoing enterprise-wide initiative striving for full compliance with Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990 for archaeological collections dating to prior to November 16, 1990. This poster discusses the general tribal and Native Hawaiian Organization consultation process in the context of NAGPRA, while incorporating Department of the Air Force (DAF) –specific consultation guidance such as the DAF Instruction 90-2002, Interactions with Federally Recognized Tribes; best practices; the challenges of working with installations and indigenous communities across the United States; and lessons learned throughout the project. The poster will also highlight the importance of tribal input on developing a repatriation process and protocols when handling and transporting human remains for tribal repatriation ceremonies. This may involve shipping or escorting remains back to their tribal communities. Security measures for the repatriation or reburial of human remains will also be discussed.
