This is an abstract from the "Issues in Regional Journal Publishing in the Americas" session, at the 90th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.
The Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology faces significant challenges in regards to its mission, digital access and distribution, subscriptions, article submissions, staffing, and especially censorious policies enacted by the state of California that limit academic freedom and therefore the ability to publish. Here we describe these challenges and develop a set of solutions to these ongoing and ominous dilemmas.
