#2108, Style III Flare rim bowl from Nan Ranch

Part of the Mimbres Pottery Images Digital Database (MimPIDD) (DRAFT) project

Year: 2012

Summary

This Flare rim bowl is an example of Style III from the NAN Ranch Ruin, a Mimbres site in Grants County, southwestern New Mexico. Its site number is LA2465, but it is also sometimes reported as Hinton Ruin (it is on land owned by the Hinton family) or LA15049. NAN Ranch Ruin was very well preserved and contained the remains of numerous pit houses and several Classic Mimbres roomblocks, as well as a large assemblage of ceramics, lithics, and faunal material. Its occupation dates from about AD 600 to 1130. NAN has been key in the development of Mimbres pottery chronologies and architectural studies. It was excavated briefly by several parties in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Then, beginning in 1978, Harry Shafer of Texas A&M University began an extensive research program at the site, comprehensively reported in Shafer?s 2003 book http://www.amazon.com/Mimbres-Archaeology-NAN-Ranch-Ruin/dp/0826322042. The collections from the NAN Ranch Ruin have recently been donated to the Western New Mexico University Museum in Silver City.
