The Ford Plantation Project, Georgia

Summary

Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive Phase I cultural resources survey and Phase II testing project in 1998, for the Ford Plantation Development, in Bryan County, Georgia. The project encompassed approximately 720 hectares (1,800 acres). Survey consisted of background archival research (to locate previously identified cultural resources and to assess the potential for new discovery), fieldwork (excavation of shovel test probes, pedestrian reconnaissance, and 2 by 2 meter test units), and report production. Phase II testing was followed by Phase III data recovery investigations at eight sites in 2000 and 2001. These eight sites (9BN44, 9BN49, 9BN56, 9BN57, 9BN58, 9BN174, 9BN176, and 9BN177) form portions of three antebellum rice plantations (Silk Hope, Cherry Hill, and Dublin/Richmond). The specific methods, results, analyses, and recommendations for Silk Hope (9BN58 and 9BN176) are presented in one volume; those for Cherry Hill (9BN49/56/57) and Dublin/Richmond (9BN44, 9BN174, and 9BN177) are in other volumes of the series.
