Semi-annual Technical Report, January 2011, Fort A.P. Hill (AP2012.001)

Summary

The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, completed Phase I archaeological survey in association with proposed forestry activities in 10 forestry blocks located in Training Areas 10, 13, 19, and 25; Controlled Access Areas 1, 13, and 16; and the Laser Range area, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The proposed forestry activities included one clearcut (Laser Range Tree Clearing), one pine selection cut (Block CA01C3-11), one pine seed tree cut (Block CA01C1-11), and seven prescribed burn areas (10-C-FY11, 13-A FY11, 19-A-FY11, 25-CFY11, CA13-A-FY11, CA16-A-FY11, and CA16-B-FY11). The Project Area consists of approximately 840.8 hectares (2,077.57 acres) of forestland.

The objective of the archaeological survey was to identify any historic properties that may be located within the proposed forestry blocks and evaluate the potential eligibility of any such resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Twelve previously recorded archaeological sites (44CE0356, 44CE0357, 44CE0358, 44CE0361, 44CE0362, 44CE0363, 44CE0365, 44CE0525, 44CE0581, 44CE0582, 44CE0591, 44CE0595, and 44CE0676) and one previously unrecorded archaeological site (44CE0676) were identified within the Project Area.

Eight sites (44CE0361, 44CE0362, 44CE0365, 44CE0581, 44CE0582, 44CE0591, 44CE0595, and 44CE0676) are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and five sites (44CE0356, 44CE0357, 44CE0358, 44CE0363, and 44CE0525) are recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. None of the identified archaeological sites will be avoided during the proposed forestry activities.
