Cultural Resources Reconnaissance of the Island Creek Basin 1979-1985

Summary

This collection is referred to as "Cultural Resources Reconnaissance of the Island Creek Basin 1979-1985.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box label. The extent of this collection is a quarter (0.25) of a linear inch.

The documents date from March 1980 to December 1985 and include Review and Compliance forms, correspondence regarding the Island Creek Basin project, a Summary of the Board Action memorandum, documents associated with the Environmental Impact Statement and Feasibility Report, and the reconnaissance report, including an oversized map of the Guyandotte River Basin. Correspondence included in the appendix of the final report dates to October 1979, which explains the date range in the project name. A number of the documents, including forms and correspondence, post-date the reconnaissance report and make reference to an Environmental Impact Statement not included in the collection. These documents were assigned to the Administrative Records series, as they refer to a continuation of the investigation following the reconnaissance study. An oversized map of Guyandotte River Basin was originally included as part of the final report (scanned asset 2086-0006). The oversized map was scanned, assigned a separate scanned asset number for tracking purposes (scanned asset 2086-0007), and removed to oversized storage. A copy of the map was printed on acid-free paper and inserted into the original location within the report.

The documents were originally housed in an acidic folder within an acid-free box and were in good condition. Metal contaminants and folds were found throughout the document collection. Metal contaminants, including staples and paperclips, were removed using a microspatula. The staple holes and any wrinkles or creases in the documents were flattened using a bone tool. An attempt was made to remove pressure sensitive tape that was present on the oversized map using a hot tool; however, this method was abandoned and acid-free mending tissue tape was applied over the pressure sensitive tape in order to avoid damage to the map.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the finding aid, original investigation report, oversized material spreadsheet, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include the archives database, correspondence, document folder listing, initial data collection, a map, notes, oversized labels, and records removal sheet. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.

DOCUMENT Full-Text US Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District.

A search of the pertinent literature and records indicate that two potentially significant historic sites were located in the Island Creek Basin. Two archaeological sites were located adjacent to the project area in the town of Logan and one archaeological site was recorded near Omar. Given the nature and location of the project alternatives it was not expected that significant sites would be effected. A cultural resources survey was recommended once a specific project alternative was selected.
