Archaeological Excavations for the Jenkins House Site (46CB41) 2002-2003

Summary

USACE, Huntington District was tasked with fulfilling a congressional-authorized restoration of the Albert Gallatin Jenkins House Site (46CB41), located in Cabell County, West Virginia. USACE, Huntington District was responsible for determining the location of the outbuildings and if they could accurately be reconstructed. Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. (CRAI), headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, conducted archaeological testing and data recovery excavations for the presence, integrity, and age of former outbuildings at the Jenkins House Site. The fieldwork was conducted in the spring and summer of 2002. William D. Updike served as principal investigator.

The site is located within the Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area, which was established for the mitigation of the Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam. The property is owned by USACE, Huntington District and managed by West Virginia Division of Culture and History (WVDCH). The house and grounds currently function as a museum.

Excavation methods consisted primarily of hand-excavated 1x1 meter test units. Prior to hand excavation, a geophysical survey, including magnetometry and earth conductivity, was performed. A probe was also used to locate previously identified buried features and to delineate the dimensions of newly identified features. Three outbuildings were identified: a detached kitchen, an office, and a privy. Excavations also identified two former basement entryways, two walkways, and a possible garden fence line. The investigation yielded over 69,000 artifacts, including floral and faunal remains (Pullin et al. 2005, Updike 2003).

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and includes select archival photographs, a finding aid, an oversized material spreadsheet, photographic material spreadsheet, artifact catalog, artifact report, and a scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional archival photographs, contact sheets, document folder listing, document labels, forms, initial data collection, logs, maps, notes, photographic material labels, photograph logs, and records removal sheets. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.
