ROI019, Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic in the Upper Wabash Valley

Summary

This is the tDAR Project page that represents Reports of Investigation 019 from the Applied Anthropology Laboratories, Ball State University. The Archaeological Resources Management service proposed to construct a study unit for the Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic periods for the Upper Wabash drainage of central Indiana (Figure l). The project was to be carried out through a review of previously documented sites and artifacts from the region and through a field survey focused on testing a model for Paleo-Indian site location common in the Ohio drainage basin. The model to be tested stated that most Paleo-Indian sites would be located on high points overlooking the confluence of a stream with a larger stream. A 20% random sample of 100 high points overlooking the confluence of a tributary stream with the Wabash River was to be surveyed. Since the greatest relief within the drainage occurred along the edges of the Wabash sluiceway, that area was chosen for testing the model. During the project, 175 Paleo-Indian and 171 Early Archaic artifacts were documented in the Upper Wabash drainage. In the following report, the project is presented in two main divisions. Part I contains the results of the field survey and a discussion of the density and distribution of Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic artifacts in the Upper Wabash drainage. Part II contains a proposed study unit for the Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic periods in the Upper Wabash drainage. The research conducted during this project was carried out under the general research design developed for the Upper Wabash drainage (Wepler and cochran l983b). This project was specifically focused on further development of the regional chronology and elucidation of prehistoric lifeways during the Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic periods. Initially, the project was oriented toward formulating a Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic sequence for the region based upon diagnostic point types. The study of prehistoric lifeways would focus on studying Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic settlement patterns. Specifically, the intention was to address the question, "Where are Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic sites located within the region?" This question would be approached through determining the density and distribution of Paleo-Indian and Early Archaic sites and artifacts within the environmental zones present within the region. Further, correlations of chert raw materials and diagnostic point types of the periods under investigation would be studied as a means of determining the home range of the various groups involved in the time periods under investigation.
