Tolleson Union High School District plans to construct a high school on the west side of 67th Avenue between Lower Buckeye Road and Broadway Road. As part of the construction project, the road will be widened in front of the new school, which will necessitate that a segment of a historic open lateral be piped underground. This study examines the historic land use patterns on what is now Kirtland Air Force Base and adjacent lands withdrawn from public use on the Cibola National Forest. The study summarizes prehistoric Native American, Spanish Colonial, and early American land use, while focusing on late Territorial (post 1880) homesteading, mining, and suburban development on this portion of the East Mesa located southeast of the city of Albuquerque.
