Plan Maps of Outlying Structures at Pueblo la Plata, Perry Mesa (2007)
In the spring of 2005, students with the Legacies on the Landscape project, under the direction of Matt Peeples, located and recorded outlying structures in the vicinity of Pueblo la Plata, on Perry Mesa. Outlying structures were mapped using the tape and compass method, resulting in plan maps by Will Russell.
Plant Materials from Coal Haul Railroad Line (SRP-RR) (1977)
A large collection of plant materials from various sites excavated along the Navajo Power Project Coal Haul Railroad was studied over a period of two years by Neal Lopinot. Most of the collections were examined before he left the St. Louis region to continue his graduate studies. Summaries of his data and comparisons with materials from other sites have been prepared by Hugh Cutler. The file includes related correspondence.
POLLEN ANALYSIS AT THREE SITES NEAR SHUMWAY, ARIZONA (1989)
Three archaeological sites located between Taylor and Shumway, Arizona along State Highway 77 were sampled for pollen analysis. Sites AZ P:12:33(ASM) and AZ P:12:35(ASM) have been tentatively identified as Archaic through the presence of early projectile points, absence of ceramics, and a single radiocarbon age of 690 ± 150 BC from AZ P:12:35(ASM) (Weaver, personal communication, August 11, 1989). Very little work has been done on Archaic age sites in this area, which represent occupation...
Pollen Analysis of Agricultural Terraces on La Plata Mesa, Agua Fria National Monument, Yavapai County, Arizona (2007) (2007)
Agricultural terraces from two sites on Perry Mesa (La Plata and Bull Tank) and one site at the north edge of Black Mesa (Richinbar Ruin) were investigated using pollen analysis. The samples are listed in Table 1 by site and context. The sites are located on mesas bounding canyons containing the headwaters of the Agua Fria River. Native populations of Agave parryi grown on the mesas and around sites grow hybrid agaves (Agave chrysantha x A. parryi) that are living artifacts of pre-Columbian...
POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSES AT SITES IN THE LINCOLN NATIONAL FOREST, NEW MEXICO (2010)
Samples from five ring middens at five sites in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico were examined for pollen and macrofloral remains. These ring middens represent roasting pits or hearths with fire-cracked rock that were used from the Archaic to the Jornada Mogollon and up through the historic Apache period. The Apache are noted to still use these types of pits to roast agave (Diane Prather, personal communication, September 22, 2010). Radiocarbon dates from these features ranged...
POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT NMAS 5476: A LIMITED ACTIVITY SITE IN EDDY COUNTY, NEW MEXICO (1983)
A prehistoric Jornada Mogollon site east of Artesia, New Mexico was the subject of salvage mitigation. The site is postulated as a campsite used for food processing and lithic reduction. To augment the interpretation of the site, pollen and macrofloral analyses were undertaken on material from Feature 2, a firepit. The site is located on a rolling plain southeast of Red Lake and immediately east of Bear Grass Draw. The area contains medium-sized hummocks interspersed with denuded areas and...
POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT SITE LA 49490, VILLAGE OF RUIDOSO DOWNS, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEW MEXICO (2006)
Site LA 49490 is a Jornada Mogollon Glencoe Phase village site located in Ruidoso Downs, Lincoln County, New Mexico. Pollen and macrofloral samples were collected from pits and a burned pithouse. Two of the pits exhibited refuse as fill and contained burials within the refuse. One of the individuals had been shot in the back and two projectile points remained with the burial. Pollen and macrofloral analyses were conducted to identify plants that might have been important in the burials and also...

Prehispanic Environmental Impact in the Mimbres Region, Southwestern New Mexico (2005)
Prehispanic settlements often had archaeologically visible impacts on their surrounding environments, including changes in local plant communities that affected the presence and abundance of both plant and animal species. Here, data from sites in the Mimbres region of southwestern New Mexico are used to identify evidence for such impacts around habitation sites, and to investigate four factors (site size, elevation, water availability, and occupational history) that influence the degree of...
Prehistoric Agriculture at La Plata: Exploring Soil Texture Changes across Features (2007)
Numerous factors affect soil composition, including the parent rock, time, rainfall, wind, and animal burrowing and wastes, but human activities undoubtedly cause the most extensive change in soil properties over the shortest periods of time. At Pueblo La Plata, intensive agricultural practices were utilized for just over 200 years, and yet, six centuries later, the legacies created on the landscape are still as visible. This paper will focus on the effects of prehistoric agriculture on soil...

Prehistoric Settlement Patterns in the Sapillo Creek Valley, Gila National Forest, New Mexico (1995)
The Sapillo Valley Survey Project was undertaken in 1993 by Robert Stokes as a M.A. thesis project. The valley was 20 percent sample surveyed using 320 m wide transects that crossed the valley from high landform to high landform, thus ensuring that a variety of landforms would be sampled. The survey resulted in recording 62 sites ranging from Late Archaic/Early Pithouse sites to Late Pithouse villages to Classic Mimbres pueblos and fieldhouses. The sites included many large ceremonial structures...
