MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS FOR THE SITE 42WS3384, UTAH (2000)

Sediment from three hearths at 42WS3384 was floated to recover macrofloral remains. One botanic sample recovered near one of the hearths also was submitted for identification. This site is a small Southern Paiute on a mesa top above Sand Hollow. Macrofloral analysis will be used to provide information concerning plant resources utilized by the Southern Paiute occupants of the site.

A single mano, recovered from site 42Ws2556, was submitted for a pollen wash to recover evidence of its use. In addition, fill from a small hearth (Feature 1), was floated to recover evidence of foods processed and/or fuel used. Site 42Ws4283, situated in the St. George Basin of southwestern Utah, represents a Southern Paiute occupation. A 2-sigma radiocarbon age of AD 1420-1650 is reported for this site. Three pollen and one macrofloral samples were examined from a deflated hearth, a mano, and the modern ground surface to describe vegetation in the vicinity at the time of occupation and also identify plants processed in the hearth and with the mano.
