Two pollen samples were examined from a Late Archaic (2620 ± 60 BP) archaeological site located approximately one mile north of Goblin Valley State park along the western central edge of the San Rafael Desert. Lithic artifacts recovered at this site included a slab metate that was washed to recover pollen evidence of plant processing. In addition, a modern ground surface sample was examined as a control sample.

Crazy Bird Shelter is located at an elevation of approximately 8400 ft. Other studies in this region at lower elevations have yielded evidence of maize. Macrofloral analysis at Crazy Bird Shelter did not provide any evidence of maize. P-II and early P-III olla fragments recovered at elevations above 10,000 ft. might have been used for long distance transport of foods including maize. Pollen and macrofloral analyses were undertaken on material from 42GR2780, a Middle Archaic site that yielded a radiocarbon age of 4420 ± 50 BP. Three continuous cultural strata were defined in the alcove that contained this site, although no cultural features were noted. Pollen and macrofloral samples were collected from strata within the alcove to identify plants that might have been exploited by occupants of this site.

Nine paired pollen and macrofloral samples from four structures and a plaza at 42SA 12209 were analyzed. This Pueblo I habitation site exhibits evidence of numerous structures and a plaza, has been only partially excavated. Samples from portions of Structures 1, 2, 5, and 6 are addressed in this report. Pollen and macrofloral sampling concentrated on the recovery of data that would shed light on subsistence activities.
