EMAP – LA3949 Unit 17 writeup 2017 (2017)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Uploaded by: Sarah Klassen

Unit 17 was a large rectangular (5.8 x 3.8 = 22.0 square meters) room in the Northeast Single-story section of the Postclassic pueblo at Las Animas Village. Its size and the presence of a hearth suggest it was a habitation room. Unit 17 shares a wall with Unit 9, but unlike Unit 9, Unit 17 has only one clear occupation. Unit 9 began as a habitation room but it was subsequently remodeled into a storage room. Unit 17 may have been built when Unit 9 was remodeled. There is no evidence of...

EMAP – LA3949 Unit 30 writeup 2017 (2004)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Uploaded by: Sarah Klassen

Unit 30 was a rectangular room (5.6 x 4.3 = 24.1 square meters) in the West Side section of the Postclassic pueblo at Las Animas Village. Although it shared a wall with a two-story room (Unit 4), there is no evidence that Unit 30 had more than one story. There is, however, good evidence that the room (floor and features) was remodeled several times. The substantial roof was probably used as a work surface; several whole manos and partial metates were found in association with this surface. ...

Embodied Political Ecology in Colonial Livestock: Using Tooth Enamel Serial Sampling to Understand Seasonal Herd Management in Colonial Arizona (2023)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Nicole Mathwich.

This is an abstract from the "Isotopic and Animal aDNA Analyses in the Southwest/Northwest" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Political ecology examines the relationship between politics and the environment and how that relationship affects ecosystems. While bioarchaeologists have shown the extensive biochemical connections in human remains resulting from political and economic inequalities, less attention has been given to the ways in which animals...

Embodied rock art motifs in far west Texas and northern South Africa (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jamie Hampson.

In this paper, I consider embodied rock art motifs in two rock art regions: far west Texas and northern South Africa. By employing the tools of embodiment theory, certain motifs in both regions can usefully be seen as expressions of how indigenous ontologies were perceived, how things were, and how identities were tied to physical beings and manifestations of physical beings. As with research on ritualistic ontologies and the process of making rock art, embodiment theory can help us overcome the...

The Embodiment of Identity: an Archaeological Perspective on Race and Self-Representation in18th -century Virginia (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only J. Hope Smith.

Institutionalized slavery helped to create the concept of race in the American mind and forced people into new social categories based on superficial bodily characteristics. These new social categories resulted in the formation of identities that were continuously negotiated, reinforced or challenged through daily bodily practices of self-presentation that included ways of dress, adornment and physical action. Because slavery was defined on the body, an embodiment approach to plantation...

Embodying Survivance: Western Apache Production Practices in the Reservation Era (2020)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Mairead Doery.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Beyond Ornamentation: New Approaches to Adornment and Colonialism" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Archaeological narratives of settler colonialism often characterize Indigenous survival strategies dualistically, encompassing either active rebellion against or total acquiescence to colonial power. Consequently, amendments to the production and design of traditional clothing and jewelry items are interpreted...
