EMAP SJ Hamlet - LA45028 Unit 10 & 11, 1998

Summary

This report summarizes the results of the excavation of LA 45028, SJ Hamlet, a small, Classic Mimbres site in the Eastern Mimbres region. SJ Hamlet was one of three Classic Mimbres sites excavated by the Eastern Mimbres Archaeological Project (EMAP) during the 1998 field season. This site was primarily excavated by Gregson Schachner, Melissa Baird, Margaret Hayes, Gavin McCullough, and Deborah Bradley under the direction of Doctors Margaret Nelson and Michelle Hegmon of Arizona State University. LA 45028 is located on the first terrace of a small drainage that flows into East Avillas Tank and then into Avillas Canyon, a southern tributary of the Palomas drainage. The site is composed of two roomblocks, a small, single room (2.5m X 2.5m) on the edge of the wash on the western edge of the site, and a 2-3 room roomblock with an adjacent possible outdoor work area approximately 20m to the east. Unit 10 is the largest room on the site and is one of two units excavated in the eastern room block. The other excavated room is Unit 11, a small storage

room adjoining the north wall of Unit 10.
