POLLEN ANALYSIS FOR SITES CA-SDI-316, CA-SDI-317, AND CA-SDI-4935B, ALONG THE SAN DIEGUITO RIVER, NORTHERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (2004)
Stratigraphic pollen analysis was undertaken at sites CA-SDI-316, CA-SDI-317, and CASDI-4935B, located within the C. W. Harris Site Archaeological District of the Starwood Project Area in Santa Fe Valley, to identify past vegetation. Pollen samples were collected at 10 cm intervals. In addition, pollen analysis can contribute to an evaluation of the degree of disturbance of deposits containing cultural materials because pollen from plants introduced during the historic era is usually very...
POLLEN ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM SITE CA-SDI-8654, CALIFORNIA (2010)
Three pollen samples were submitted from sediment samples from site CA-SDI-8654 in the San Ysidro Mountains. These samples were collected stratigraphically for the purpose of examining the record of past vegetation.
POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AND CHARCOAL IDENTIFICATION OF SAMPLES FROM CA-SDI-20130, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (2014)
Site CA-SDI-20130, a prehistoric habitation site, is located in San Diego County along the coast between the community of La Jolla and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (Pigniolo, et al. 2009). The site has been heavily disturbed by modern development and although its true extent is currently an estimate, the original boundary is believed to include an area near the Pacific shore line on a natural ridge representing a Pleistocene sand bar adjacent to an estuary. Artifacts, a sparse midden...
POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS AT THE HARRIS SITE, SDI 4935, CALIFORNIA AND BLOOD RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF ARTIFACTS FROM SITE SDI-4935B (HARRIS SITE), CALIFORNIA (1990)
POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS AT THE HARRIS SITE, SDI 4935, CALIFORNIA: Pollen and Phytolith analyses were conducted at the Harris Site (SDI-4935) in San Diego County, California. Stratigraphic pollen analysis was undertaken to provide information concerning past vegetation communities, as well as paleoenvironmental conditions. A single stratigraphic column was examined at 10 cm intervals to provide samples at close enough intervals for detailed interpretation of the past environment. Pollen...
POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS FROM SDI-7197, THE SALT CREEK I PROJECT, CALIFORNIA (1990)
POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS FROM SDI-7197, THE SALT CREEK I PROJECT, CALIFORNIA: Pollen and phytolith analysis was conducted on groundstone and flaked stone tools from this site in an effort to define the plants that were processed with these tools. BLOOD RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF ARTIFACTS FROM SITE SDI-7197 CALIFORNIA: The primary objective of this analysis was to determine if information derived by the analysis of blood residues retained on lithic artifacts could provide further...
POLLEN AND STARCH ANALYSIS OF FEATURES AND PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF STONE TOOLS FROM SITES CA-SDI-7060 AND CA-SDI-7074, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (2012)
Sites CA-SDI-7074 and CA-SDI-7060 are located approximately 3 miles west of the town of Jacumba, California, near the boarder with Mexico. Various types of stone tools and sediment collected from three features at these sites were submitted for protein residue, pollen and starch analyses. Analyses were undertaken to better understand the plant and animal resources utilized by the site occupants.
POLLEN, MACROFLORAL, PROTEIN RESIDUE, AND ORGANIC RESIDUE (FTIR) ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND ARTIFACTS FROM SITE CA-SDI-10690, CAMP PENDLETON, CALIFORNIA (2010)
Column samples from site CA-SDI-10690 at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County, California, were submitted for macrofloral analysis. Protein residue, organic residue (FTIR) and pollen analyses were conducted on three stone tools, and pollen control samples were examined from the four corners of the site. This site represents a lithic and tool scatter associated with a Luiseño occupation. The goal of these analyses was to identify plant and animal remains useful in interpreting subsistence and...
POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, AND PROTEIN RESIDUE (CIEP) ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM SITES CA-SDI-21271, CA-SDI-21282 AND CA-SDI-21517, CAMP PENDLETON, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (2017)
The Camp Pendleton Basewide Water Infrastructure Improvements Project yielded flaked stone and ground stone tools for analysis to assess their use. Tools were collected from three sites (CA-SDI-21271, CA-SDI-21282, and CA-SDI-21517). Protein residue analysis addresses evidence of proteins from animals and a few plants, while pollen, phytolith, and starch analysis targeted use of plants (pollen) including grasses (phytoliths) and seeds and underground storage organs (starch).
POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, AND PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF ARTIFACTS FROM THE 4S RANCH PROJECT, CALIFORNIA (1999)
Artifacts from eight sites in the 4S Ranch Project in San Diego County, southern California were analyzed for pollen, phytoliths, or protein residues. Column samples also were floated to recover charred macrofloral remains. The project area is located on the first range of hills rising above the Pacific Ocean and contains over 20 archaeological sites. Soil samples from these sites yielded uncalibrated conventional radiocarbon dates ranging from 7400 + 140 BP to 300 + 60 BP. The project area...
POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, PROTEIN RESIDUE (CIEP), MACROFLORAL, AND ORGANIC RESIDUE (FTIR) ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM SITES CA-SDI-21240 AND CA-SDI-21805, CAMP PENDLETON, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (2018)
Sites CA-SDI-21240 and CA-SDI-21805 are located on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County, California. Cultural deposits at both sites contain marine shell and animal bones, as well as flaked stone and groundstone tools (Tanya Wahoff, personal communication April 26, 2018). Various artifacts collected from both sites were submitted for protein residue, pollen, and phytolith analysis. Soil control samples associated with artifacts also were provided. Macrofloral analysis...
