Terrestrial Scanning at Pacbitun
The majority of terrestrial scanning projects in archaeology have focused on heritage documentation, preservation, and the 3D reconstruction of prominent sites and objects. While these are very important archaeological foci, not many have used terrestrial scanning methods for prospection and feature analysis, similar to the way many have employed airborne LiDAR. While airborne LiDAR scanning is able to situate and analyze archaeological sites on an expansive scale, the ground-based method also...
Terryn Homestead Site (8BR02243) (2008)
Reports and photographs related to the Terryn Homestead Site.
Tlajinga, Teotihuacan, Mexico
Investigations of the Proyecto Arqueológico Tlajinga Teotihuacan (PATT) focus on the Tlajinga district, a cluster of neighborhoods in the southern part of Teotihuacan, Mexico. The area was inhabited by a lower socioeconomic stratum, was the locus of intensive utilitarian craft production, and is bisected by the city’s central artery—named the Street of the Dead by the later Aztecs, who viewed Teotihuacan as a mythical place of origins and an archetypal city. Research goals of the PATT scale from...

An Underwater Cultural Resources Survey of a Proposed Marina on Battery Creek (2008)
This report presents the results of underwater archaeological survey investigations conducted in June 2008. Brockington and Associates, Inc., of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, contracted Diversified Wilbanks, Inc., to conduct an underwater cultural resources survey of Battery Creek adjacent to the land in Port Royal, South Carolina, formerly occupied by the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The survey was pursuant to the development of this area into a city marina for the town of Port Royal,...
Underwater Magnetometer Remote Survey for Exploration Contract E-101 in North Brevard County (1990)
The Division of Historical Resources has entered into a Search Contract (E-101) with Reale Gold, Inc., and Galleon Artifacts Corp., both Florida corporations. This contract area is off the coast of north Brevard County, Florida, in the vicinity of Cape Canaveral, and is approximately 12 nautical miles long, 1 nautical mile wide at the north end, and 1 nautical mile wide at the south end, forming a triangle shape. Reale Gold, Inc., and Galleon Artifacts Corp. have agreed to work under the...
United States Congressional Record Honors the Discovery of Hernando De Soto's 1539 Encampment and the Lost Native American Town of Potano (2017)
United States Congressional Record 115th Congress, 1st Session Issue: Vol. 163, No. 193 US Congressional Record honors the discovery of Hernando de Soto's 1539 Encampment and the lost Native American town of Potano, by the University of Florida professors, Dr. Fred A. White and Dr. Michele C. White, and University of Florida Anderson Scholar and History Honors Graduate, Ethan A. White. This newly discovered archaeological site is the oldest confirmed New World contact site in the United...
Using Black Earth and Remote Sensing - Methods and Guidelines for Analysis of Indicator Species Distribution Using Remote Sensing - Presentation (Legacy 10-416) (2012)
This presentation continues the topic in the "Recommendations for Applying Results to DoD Modeling Initiatives" above. Remote sensing is defined, methods are presented, and interpretation and analysis are discussed. The theses of the presentation are that vegetation types containing high density of archaeological sites should show the highest potential for discovery of previously unknown cultural sites, and remote sensing, especially high-resolution aerial imagery, is useful in efficiently...
Using Black Earth and Remote Sensing - Soil Analysis, Methods and Guidelines - Presentation (Legacy 10-416) (2012)
This presentation defines black earth/soils; describes sampling, lab, and analytical methods; outlines the use of the results in ArcMap (Inverse Distance Weighting spatial interpolation tool), and discusses species and soil mineral contents that may indicate use by Native Americans. The thesis of the presentation is that an integration of the use of vegetative indicator species and black earth has more predictive power than either alone.
Using Black Earth and Remote Sensing of Indicator Plants for Identification of Prehistoric Archaeological Sensitivity and Potential Site Integrity in the Eastern Woodlands (Legacy 10-416)
This project collected soils data at four installations (Fort Drum, NY; Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA, Cheatham Annex of Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, VA, and Dare County Bombing Range of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, NC) to explore the efficacy of black earth as an indicator of Indian activity on the landscape. The project's report includes analysis and major conclusions, which were applied to develop management strategies that can be implemented across a wide range of DoD holdings in the...
