Hunting with talc? Experiments into the functionality of certain Late Neolithic ground projectile points from the site of Liangchengzhen, Peoples Republic of China (2009)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Geoffrey Cunnar. William Schindler. Anne Underhill. Fengshi Luan. Hui Fang.

Collaborative excavations by the Shandong University and Field Museum at the Longshan Period site of Liangchengzhen in eastern Shandong Province, China have uncovered over 200 projectile points constructed from several prevalent material types of varying hardness. The majority of the points were finished by grinding. The smaller percentage were finished by pressure flaking. Raw materials utilized in projectile point manufacture included chlorite schist, chert and talc schist. To better...

An Indication of Hunting Activities from Southern Nevada rock art (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Dena Sedar.

Rock art hunting scenes are often ascribed as hunting magic or as part of a shamanistic ritual in which the rock art panel portrays the desired outcome of a hunt. However, it can be argued that there are petroglyph panels that depict what was actually occurring at a site. 26CK383 is a prehistoric site in Southern Nevada with numerous rock art panels, including one panel that shows two anthropomorphs directing desert bighorn sheep into what appears to be a corral. This could be a representation...

An Introduction to the Atlatl (1994)
DOCUMENT Citation Only David Wescott.

J. Whittaker: [OK intro, but too many errors]. He has an interesting concept of different kinds of atlatl systems: “throwing board” = rigid, heavy harpoons; “spear thrower” = some flex, long heavy spears [but atlatls don’t go back to Neanderthal times]; “flexible system” = SW, flexy light atlatls and darts with weights and other tuning; “casting stick” = baton de commandment and other thong-using throwers and very flexy atlatls [not the same]. [His explanations borrow too much from Perkins’...

The Last Spear Throwers (2006)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Andy Hall.

J. Whittaker: Hunting with Jimmy Okitkun on the Yukon delta, spearing seals with atlatl because in fresh water they sink if you shoot them. Spear of driftwood with ivory or brass harpoon. Chasing seal with motor boat, repeated throws up to 100 feet before success. Graphic shows “nuqaq” simple Arctic form with paddle handle, one hole for finger, ivory hook [much like the one I made]. [Nice article].

Le Bâton de Commandement (1965)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Leon Underwood.

J. Whittaker: [Odd article, not very useful. Begins with irrelevant and muddled rant on failure of science to recognize art and the subjective.] By labeling baton de commandement a "magic" object, its function was ignored. Not magic, not shaft straightener. Early cave art (Altamira) static, while later (Lascaux) dynamic, reflecting new weapon: baton as spear thrower. Holes comparable to grips on Eskimo versions, but Eskimo are wood, cruder, throw larger spear. [Illustrations show his...
