Digital Archaeology and the Curation Crisis: 3D Modeling as an Answer to the Problems of Collections Access and Use (2014)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Mallory Marcone.

The archaeological curation crisis has plagued repositories and archaeologists alike with a multitude of problems for several decades, most notably inaccessibility to collections. Archaeological artifacts continue to be curated in repositories with little prospect of ever being used by researchers to uncover new information about the past, rendering them essentially useless and removing much of the moral justification of archaeology itself. However, in creating digital 3D models of artifacts and...

DOCUMENT Citation Only Andrea Farmer. Michael K. Trimble.

The recognition that our field is based on scientifically curated national collections has re–emerged as a core value of the archaeological community.  While most archaeologists recognize curation and collections management as being integral to our field, resource allocation for these collections have never adequately addressed our national need.  The preservation and digitization of collections is now seen as key to the survival of the field and the science of archaeology.  The U.S. Army Corps...

An Experimental Test of the Accuracy and Adequacy of In-Field Artifact Analysis - Report (Legacy 11-157) (2013)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Michael Heilen.

This report discusses the validity of the assumptions made when, for the sake of conserving funding and curation space, in-field artifact analysis is used over lab analysis of artifacts in western states. Because test results showed that in-field and digital photo analyses of artifacts are of low accuracy and often inadequate for site interpretation, a set of recommendations is made for deciding how and in what situations field analysis is best applied.
