Archaeological Investigations of 14 Sites at Holloman Air Force Base New Mexico (2002)

During the spring of 2000, archaeologists with Lone Mountain Archaeological Services, Inc., conducted testing and salvage excavations at 14 archaeological sites administered by Holloman Air Force Base through a contract with Fort Bliss. Investigations in the well field demonstrated that many of the sites there have been reduced by erosion. Most of the artifact assemblages have been exposed and in many cases, displaced by water action.

Survey was conducted in a 100-m transect around the Boles Wells boundary fence (approximately 75 acres) and 595 acres in the north half of the well field for a total of 271 ha (670 acres). The survey documented 13 previously unrecorded prehistoric sites and 2 historic sites. More information on a previously recorded prehistoric site was added to existing documentation. Holloman Air Force Base (HAFB) is planning to maintain an existing dirt road on the Boles Wells complex. Project activities will consist of using heavy equipment to blade the road and straighten some sharp curves. In addition, metal culverts along the road need to be replaced periodically.

Report and SHPO correspondence regarding the plan to replace a series of water lines at the Boles Wells Water System Annex (BWWSA). Project activities will consist of the replacement of existing, substandard water lines with new 4" to 10" diameter pipes. The old lines shall be abandoned in place.
