The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is tasked with the recovery of missing crew from aircraft crash sites around the world. Scientific methods utilized especially for deep excavation have been developed over the last 100 years of archaeological method and theory (most especially within the realm of Cultural Resource Management) and can be applied to the work at DPAA. Whether the...

Coal-fired Power: Household goods, Hegemony, and Social Justice at Appalachian Company Coal Mining Towns (2017)
Hegemonic power structures in Appalachia solidified during industrialization and shape the region’s representation and economic strategies today. Appalachia is a land of backward hillbillies in the public consciousness, alternately uplifted and oppressed by extractive industries. Popular perceptions privilege the coal industry’s ‘power over’ Appalachian people without confronting the dynamic interplay of many power structures. Household goods from two Kentucky company coal towns illuminate the...
Collective Action in Inter-Theoretical Perspective (2013)
It has been five years since The Archaeology of Collective Action was published in UPF’s "American Experience" series. This paper summarizes the purpose of the book and reflects on the dozen or so reviews that appeared in a wide variety of publications. It also describes the "reviewer polarization" that was produced when the essence of the book was distilled and packaged for inclusion in an edited volume on the evolutionary dynamics of cooperative behavior. This polarization forced...

Community Archaeology at a Neighborhood Scale in Boston's Chinatown (2020)
This is a poster submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. A significant Chinese immigrant wave began in Boston during the 1870’s. Throughout the next decade, a centralized Chinese community began to form downtown on Harrison, Essex, and Beach Avenues. This neighborhood allowed residents to converge on Sundays, meet with friends, buy food and supplies, and seek solace through gambling and opium. Recently, Boston’s Chinatown residents requested an...
Community Archaeology on a Social Housing Estate in the Early 21st Century: Middlefield Lane, Gainsborough (UK) (2018)
Middlefield Lane, in the former Midlands industrial town of Gainsborough (UK), was one of many new post-war British social housing estates built to replace crowded, insanitary 19th century slums with better quality housing and open space, and modelled on the 1928 ‘garden city’ plan of Radburn, New Jersey. Radburn is a national monument but elsewhere, time and policy-makers have left such estates deprived and unprepossessing places with high levels of social deprivation. Social critics have...
Conduits of Dispersal. Dematerializing an early twentieth century village in Iceland. (2013)
This paper explores the process of ruination in terms of networks and channels of dispersal; how the materiality of a whole village is stripped by various agencies which move things along. Drawing especially on recent work in human geography and new mobility and materiality turn, this study takes an industrial fishing village on an island in the bay of Reykjavík to examine the processes and conduits through which the village is de-materialized. The village was established at the beginning of the...
Confronting Uncomfortable Pasts: Gender and Domestic Violence in Pennsylvania Company Towns, 1850 to Present (2016)
Historical archaeology has an opportunity to tell histories that have been obscured, overlooked, or forgotten, purposefully or otherwise, through the passage of time; however, some of these facets of the past continue to ring true in the present. Archaeologists from the University of Maryland have documented patterns and stories of domestic violence in small company "patch" towns in Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Anthracite coal region covering nearly 100 years of history. Oral histories with town...
Connerton’s "Seven Kinds of Forgetting" and the Lattimer Massacre: A critique and an application (2013)
Anthropologist John Connerton’s brief essay "Seven Kinds of Forgetting" provides a foundation and touchstone for recent explorations in the study of memory and modernity. Rhizomatic in nature, the essay succeeds in opening up, and also fragmenting, explorations of memory spanning a broad theoretical spectrum of critical, materialist and culturalist approaches. This essay adapts, critiques and expands upon Connerton’s notions of memory using the example of memory and forgetting in the subsequent...
Conservation Fund, Antiquities Act Prove Great for Outdoors (2011)
The far-reaching America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) Report, released on February 16, synthesizes input from a national conversation that got Americans talking about the places they love and how they want to work together to protect them. Policymakers on both sides of the aisle can take direction from the nation’s collective wisdom as they look to...

This is an abstract from the "Exploring the Recent Past" session, at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. In an increasingly mobile world, the places most central to peoples' identities are often modern and fluid, as opposed to fixed and related to historic origins. This paper discusses 1947 Partition refugee resettlement housing in Delhi which was an important site of national identity construction. Following Indian independence, the millions of refugees who...

Controversy over Antiquities Act and National Monuments makes little sense (2010)
Recently, some members of Congress have attempted to create controversy with an anonymous leak of an “Internal Draft — NOT FOR RELEASE” memo within the Department of Interior. The leaked memo contained a list of 14 areas in nine states that might be worthy of being designated as national monuments under the Antiquities Act. The memo clearly stated, “further evaluations should be completed prior to any final decision, including an assessment of public and Congressional support.” For those of us...

This platform was recovered in 2014 and evaluated for microbiologically influenced corrosion. During the eleven years of deep ocean placement, the oak coupons degraded in four to six years while the mahogany disappeared after ten years. Biomass was...
