Historical archaeology and archaeological practice in Denmark (2013)
The concept of archaeology and the structure of professional archaeology in Denmark differ from those of the Anglo-Saxon world. This is especially true when speaking of historical archaeology. Though medieval archaeology has experienced an inclusion into mainstream archaeology during the last few decades, much of what is considered archaeology in Britain and the United States is not seen as such in Denmark. This condition is due to historical conditions and divisions within the museum world. But...
Housing for the metal trades in the industrial colony of Parkwood Springs, 1860-1970 (2017)
This paper will explore housing for working-class metal workers in Sheffield. The focus of the paper will be the nineteenth-century industrial colony of Parkwood Springs in north Sheffield, in the United Kingdom. Residential housing was constructed on the Parkwood Springs site to house workers employed in metal trades. The neighbourhood was isolated, as access was limited to a road tunnel running under a railway bridge, and later a footbridge - the primary route for local school children to the...

Italian Ceramics: Compositional and Descriptive Data (2014)
This dataset contains compositional (elemental abundance) and descriptive data for a total of 127 ceramic specimens from Italy, analyzed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). These data were generated by neutron activation analysis (NAA) at LBNL between the late 1960s and early 1990s. Data from the LBNL were transferred to the Archaeometry Laboratory at the University of Missouri, where they were digitized for distribution through tDAR. Elemental abundance data could not be...

Latex Molds of Petroglyphs at Legend Rock and Torrey Lake, Wyoming (2015)
In 2015, a document titled BBHC Rock Art Project Phase I: Technicians Report was discovered in the McCracken Research Library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. This document, never published, describes the making of latex molds at Wyoming petroglyphs sites. In the present article, we identify the individual petroglyphs molded during the project to alert others who might be studying the sites.
Lost Somewhere in the Middle-Range: Current Trends in North American Archaeology (1997)
More than thirty years have passed since the ideas of New Archaeology swept through the discipline. Since then, archaeologists have made many advances in archaeological methods and theory. Reviewing the present literature, however, I question if the current trends in North American archaeology are still a part of the New Archaeology’s research program. In this paper I first review the developmental stages that New Archaeology has gone through, and then suggest where American archaeology stands...
The Lower Verde Archaeological Project
The Lower Verde Archaeological Project (LVAP) was a four-year data recovery project conducted by Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI) in the lower Verde River region of central Arizona. The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, Arizona Project’s Office sponsored the research program in compliance with historic preservation legislation. The LVAP’s...
A Middle Range Research Project in Fire Pit Technology (1997)
During recent excavations at the Maneater Cave site (Zeimens and Baars 1996) a number of slab-lined pit features were encountered (Figure 1). All appear to have been used as fire hearths. Three of these yielded corrected radiocarbon dates of BC 4080 (Beta 84881), BC 4340 (Beta 86401), and BC 4320 (Beta 85550). Located adjacent to some of the slab-lined features were shallow basin-shaped depressions. The hardened floor and blackened zone on the inside surface of these depressions indicate that...
Modern Ruins: Revealing the Other Face of Things (2013)
Modern ruins hold an ambiguous position in both academic and public discourse. By blurring established cultural categories of past and present, purity and dirt, waste and heritage, they become matter out of place and out of time. In this paper I draw attention to another source for this ambiguity, at the same time disturbing and attracting, and which is argued constitutes a crucial aspect of their ruin value: the manifestation of things in their released otherness.

Ochre Use in Middle Stone Age East and Central Africa
Symbolism, including language, is widely viewed as an essential element of modern human behavior. Documenting the evolutionary origins of such behavior, however, has proven difficult. Ochre pigments (iron oxides) form a major part of the evidence used to interpret when humans began communicating through symbols. Excavations at Olorgesailie, Kenya; Karonga, Malawi; and Twin Rivers, Zambia have yielded ochre artifacts that may indicate very early occurrences of symbolism. Yet mineral pigments may...
Offers You Can’t Refuse: An Overview Of DPAA’s Strategic Partnerships Initiative (2017)
This presentation describes DPAA’s Strategic Partnerships program, which is a novel effort within DoD to leverage the resources and expertise of external sources. Partnership categories broadly include public-private partnerships (P3s), grants, cooperative agreements, voluntary arrangements, and even contracts. The intent is to expand or improve DPAA’s ability to account for the missing by selectively outsourcing some components of the overall workload. In addition, DPAA pursues initiatives that...
‘Own It!’ Reflections On The Value Of Indigenous Archaeological Ethnography As Community Engagement (2018)
Current debate in public archaeology has repositioned archaeologists as members of the community, rather than specialists distinct from the public. Although this moves away from privileging archaeological perspectives of the past towards a more dialogical engagement with communities, in practice the motivations and agendas of specialists and public with respect to the archaeological resource are not easily reconciled. An archaeological ethnography example from Crete explores the tensions between...
Phase IA Survey of Property Along the Suitland Parkway North of Andrews Air Force Base, Prince George’s County, Maryland (2002)
John Milner Associates, Inc., conducted a Phase IA archeological survey in an area on either side of the Suitland Parkway, on land managed by the National Park Service, that may be affected by tree management activities (trimming, removal, and replanting) north of the runway approaches to Andrews Air Force Base. A pedestrian survey was conducted on approximately 57 acres of land. It resulted in the recommendation for testing of approximately 24 acres within the project area that have high...

Sites A and M represent areas of occupation, while site C represents the control setting. Pollen and phytolith analysis yielded an abundance of remains.
A Preliminary Assessment of Archaeological Content in News Media (2008)
The media provide a great opportunity to communicate archaeology to a broad audience, and newspapers are the primary means for receiving news for millions of Americans. I examine the archaeological content of newspaper articles in the New York Times from June and December of 1995, 2000, and 2005 to document geographical, chronological, and topical emphases as well as the portrayal of archaeology in the media. This study suggests that the public has a vague and unclear understanding of...
