Cleaning Submerged Artillery: Tools and Methods Used to Conserve Cannon from Blackbeard’s Flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge (1718) (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Erik R Farrell. Jeremy Borrelli.

The conservation cleaning of concreted marine-archaeological cannon is a complex and multidimensional problem. At present, archaeologists have uncovered 30 cannon amongst the shipwreck remains of Blackbeard’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR). Currently, the QAR Conservation Laboratory holds 18 of these cannon in various stages of conservation. This places the QAR Lab in a unique position to develop practical treatment solutions for such a large collection of submerged artillery. Various...

Coinage at French & Indian War Sites in Northern New York State (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only David R. Starbuck.

Archaeology conducted by SUNY Adirondack and Plymouth State University at British military sites located along the Hudson River and in Lake George, New York, has recovered much colonial coinage that will be summarized here. Twenty-five years of excavations at British military encampments dating to the French & Indian War in northern New York State has revealed that mid-18th-century commerce was conducted with a combination of British and Spanish currency--a mixture of low-denomination English...

Convict Housing at Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia: a study in the context of British workers’ and American slave accommodation (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Harold Mytum.

Parramatta was even more successful than Sydney in the late 18th century, during the early days of the British colony. After a short period of ad hoc settlement around the farm at Rose Hill, Parramatta was laid out as a planned settlement on a grid pattern. Several early convict cabins have been excavated, and early maps and illustrations indicate the settlement’s layout and appearance, with neatly spaced cabins and the Governor’s House as a central focus. This arrangement can be compared with...

Corrosion Monitoring and Preservation in Situ of Large Iron Artifacts at the Queen Anne’s Revenge Shipwreck site (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Sarah Watkins-Kenney.

At North Carolina state archaeological site 31CR314 (Queen Anne’s Revenge), the overall conservation management strategy is full excavation and recovery of all artifacts. Preservation and protection of artifacts in situ is, however, needed as long as they remain on site. Research on in situ monitoring and preservation of large iron artifacts (cannon and anchors) began in 2008. With funding provided by a Mini North Carolina Sea Grant further data was collected in 2012-2013 for eight cannon and...

Cost, quality and value in historical archaeology
PROJECT Penny Crook.

This doctoral research program explored three key concepts in nineteenth-century consumerism - cost, quality and value - and the role they play in examining the archaeological material culture of the modern world. It encompassed two primary strands of inquiry: one, a consumption-theory driven study of trade catalogues to analyse the cost and promotion of 19th-century tablewares; and two, a close study of production flaws observed in archaeological sherds. These culminated in a consideration of...

Creolization in the Frontiers: Apalachee Identity and Culture Change in the 18th Century (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Michelle M Pigott.

By the early 18th century, the Northern Gulf Coast was a nexus of cultural exchange; home to many displaced native peoples. After the destruction of their homeland of Tallahassee in 1704, the Apalachee became dispersed across the American Southeast, contacting numerous cultures including the Creeks, several Mobile Bay and Mississippi Valley Indian groups, and French and Spanish colonists. The Pensacola-Mobile region developed into a cultural borderland which facilitated creolization and...

Crime and Criminality in 18th Century Virginia (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jessica L Barry.

The definition of a criminal has always been "a person who commits a crime," but the definition of a crime has been fluid through time. There are levels of severity of crimes and they all don’t carry the same weight in the justice system or in society. In Colonial Virginia, there were prisons in every county as well as a courthouse where the trials were held. This small conglomeration of buildings were at the heart of the county seat where the civil and social lives of the citizens flourished....

DOCUMENT Citation Only Brandy Joy. Charles Cobb. Tammy Herron.

Irish émigré George Galphin established a trading post on the Carolina frontier in the mid-1700s. His skills working with Native Americans provided him considerable wealth through the deerskin trade. He was widely regarded among the Creek Nation, and he represented the Carolina colony on several occasions in major negotiations with Native American groups. Galphin parlayed his wealth into a considerable plantation on his trading post property, and his plantation at Silver Bluff became one of the...
